The Law of Marketing Karma

We’ve all heard about Karma: “The total effect of a person's actions and conduct during the successive phases of the person's existence, regarded as determining the person's destiny.” 

In other words, What goes around comes around.

You are probably thinking, what the heck does karma have to do with marketing? The fact is, too many business people don’t realize their actions (or inaction) may be affecting their public image and product sales. 

If your marketing is “all about you” it doesn’t do much to elicit a positive response from others. By actively providing help and support to others, you can build a solid following for you and your brand.


Simple Steps for Creating Good Marketing Karma:


  •     Be thankful.  When you meet with others or get a new client or sale send a thank you note immediately after.  Not an email.  Not a text. An actual, old-fashioned note (handwritten if possible) is best.  This is almost a lost art and  everyone appreciates being appreciated. 
  •     Be supportive.  If someone consistently “likes,” comments or shares your Social Media posts, make sure to return the favor when you can.  By not reciprocating they can feel ignored - remember - support goes both ways.
  •     Return the call:  Even if you are extremely busy (as we all are) make sure to return business calls or emails promptly - within 24 hours if not sooner. By not doing so you can appear unprofessional and even rude.  Being responsive will always give a positive impression. Think of it this way: If you don’t return calls why should they return yours?
  •     Be genuine.  People can sense insincerity faster than you can say “slick.” Be real in your marketing and sales approach. Give honest information with no hidden gimmicks. This helps to builds trust in you and your product. 
  •     If you want something- give it. If you want your clients to respond to marketing surveys you need to respond to marketing surveys (strange as this sounds it works).  If you want people to read your posts, start reading theirs. This principle works in business and in your personal life, too! 
  •     Applaud the efforts of others.  The world is not all about you.  When someone or something touches or impresses you – tell someone else! This helps them and enhances your image, too. 
  •     A little effort goes a long way. If someone sends you a request to like a page, forward an email, do so whenever you can.  By doing so they will be more likely to support you when YOU need it.
  •     Give honest feedback. If a business asks you for feedback on their marketing or website, try to do so. Be honest but try not to be brutal if it’s truly awful. Giving feedback can also provide new insight on things you can do to improve YOUR marketing.
  •     Always do what you say you are going to do.  If you tell someone that you are going to do something on their behalf – do it. If you say you are going to check on an order - do it.  When you don’t follow through it can hurt your reputation. If you absolutely can’t follow-through (and hey, no one is perfect) tell them why. This shows your integrity.
